Little Adventures Nursery Washwood Heath offered to take kids to the seaside but almost 200 people turned up!
For many families, it was their first ever visit to the beach. Birmingham nursery takes 200 children and families on a seaside adventure trip after many children said they had never been.
What started as a modest idea to take a group of nursery children to the seaside turned into an unforgettable community day out as almost 200 parents, grandparents and children turned up!
Staff at Little Adventures Organic Nursery & Preschool in Washwood Heath had originally hoped to fill a single coach.
However, they had such a great response that they ended up booking four coaches and taking 192 people to Weston-super-Mare. For many families, it was their first ever visit to the beach.
“We honestly thought we’d be lucky to fill one coach, to see four coaches leaving together with so many excited children and their families was incredibly special,” said nursery manager Karen Gordon.
“What made the day even more memorable was seeing grandparents, mums, dads and brothers and sisters all sharing the experience together.
“For many of our children it was their first visit to the seaside, and seeing their excitement when they reached the beach was something none of us will forget.”
The trip, made possible largely through Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) funding, gave families from the local community the opportunity to spend quality time together and create memories that might otherwise have been beyond reach.
Children paddled in the sea, built sandcastles, played games on the beach and enjoyed a traditional British seaside day alongside parents, grandparents and siblings.
She added: “We’ve received so many lovely messages from parents afterwards thanking us for organising the trip and telling us how much it meant to them.
“It really showed what can happen when a community comes together.”
Little Adventures Organic Nursery & Preschool is part of the Family Adventures Group, set up by Tom and Laura Filer, a husband-and-wife team on a mission to improve indoor play experiences and childcare.
The outing reflects their ethos – that meaningful shared experiences play a vital role in children’s learning, confidence and emotional wellbeing.
Laura said the success of the day demonstrated the importance of making family experiences accessible to everyone. “This wasn’t simply a day at the beach,” said Laura.
“It was about giving families the chance to spend uninterrupted time together, explore somewhere new and enjoy experiences that many of us take for granted.
“Watching nearly 200 people share that experience, many visiting the seaside for the first time, was incredibly moving. “It perfectly reflects what we’re trying to achieve by putting families and childhood experiences at the heart of everything we do.”
For many of those on board, the trip was far more than a coach journey to Weston-super-Mare.
It was a first glimpse of the sea, a chance to build sandcastles, paddle in the waves and spend precious time together as a family, creating memories that organisers hope will last long after the summer has ended.
